A Psalm of Thanksgiving

Psalm 100 is short enough to memorize in one week but packed enough to fill your mind and heart with God’s goodness for a lifetime. Read this familiar Psalm again:

   Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!

   Serve the Lord with gladness!

Come into his presence with singing!

   Know that the Lord, he is God!

It is he who made us, and we are his;

we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

   Enter his gates with thanksgiving,

and his courts with praise!

Give thanks to him; bless his name!

   For the Lord is good;

his steadfast love endures forever,

and his faithfulness to all generations.

  1. Notice the Invitation to Joy. Actually, it is not an invitation; it is a command. Our relationship with God is to be marked with joy. We are to serve the Lord and his church with gladness, not begrudging the service. Singing is the highest expression of a heart filled with joy.
  1. Knowledge is Foundational. Our mission at Oak Hills, “Longing to know God’s astonishing grace,” springs from such verses as Psalm 100:3. We do not manufacture the joyful response in verses 1 & 2. Joy is the natural response to being redeemed by Christ and united to our heavenly Father. If we lack joy, we lack appropriate faith and rest in our redemption. Naturally, then, we are commanded to “know” this gracious God and his redemptive work.
  1. Thanksgiving is a Mark of True Believers. Paul says in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “Give thanks in all circumstances.” Why is thanksgiving essential? Giving thanks is the mark of one who is humble, dependent, and knowledgeable of God’s provision. As Paul says in 1 Corinthians 4:7, “What do you have that you did not receive?”
  1. God’s Character is the Ground or Source For All of This. The little conjunction “for” at the beginning of verse 5 is key to the whole psalm. It explains why we should be joyful, seek to know God, and give thanks. God is good; the very definition and standard of all that is good. His steadfast love and faithfulness are core character qualities from which all of God’s activity springs. This is no one, and no god, like Yahweh! He is the source of our joy. He is worthy of knowing. He deserves all of our thanksgiving.

Let the commands and truth of this Psalm fill your heart and mind with new depths of Thanksgiving!
