Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion

  1. Read Mark 8:34-38. After Peter’s rebuke (see verses 32-33) why does Jesus turn to the crowd with this message? Is there a connection with Satan’s temptation of Jesus in the wilderness (see Matt. 4:1-11)?
  2. Is there a progression that builds from denying yourself to taking up your cross to following Jesus? What is that progression (in other words, how to they build on each other)? What does it mean for us to take up our cross?
  3. In verse 35 what does it mean to “save his life”? What are some common ways humans tend to try to “save their lives”?
  4. In Luke 9:23 the word “daily” is added to the command to take up your cross. What does it look like for you to take up your cross “daily”?
