Hebrews: The Greatness of Christ

Help From a Brother, Part 1

  • The Necessity of Christ’s Suffering
  • Solidarity with Brother Jesus
  • The Liberation of Christ

Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:

  1. Read Hebrews 2:10-18. Consider the first phrase, “it was fitting.” Why would the author even have to address what was “fitting” for God to do?
  2. It seems that almost every English translation has a different term for the title of Jesus in verse 10: founder/pioneer/captain/author of their salvation. What do you think the author is trying to communicate about Jesus with this title? Compare with the other uses of this word in Heb. 12:2, Acts 3:15 & 5:31.
  3. How does the author explain our solidarity with Jesus? Why is it important that he shares in flesh & blood?
  4. Why do we fear death? What is the nature of Satan’s power over death and our slavery? How does Jesus free us? How does this work out in our daily lives?

Memory Verse of the Week:

Hebrews 2:14-15 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. (ESV)
