Cultivating a Deeper Hunger for Jesus

  • Levi’s Conversion Sparks Controversy
  • Fasting Centers on Jesus
  • The New Fasting for the New Kingdom Realities

Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:

  1. Read Luke 5:27-39. What catches your attention from this passage? Why?
  2. Levi’s response in verse 28 is astonishing. Skim Luke 4 & 5. What events may Levi have already heard about regarding Jesus? How might have these prepared him to respond as he did?
  3. Why are the Pharisees grumbling? What does Jesus emphasize in his response in verses 31-32? How do these words impact you?
  4. Why do you think the discussion transitions to fasting? In verses 34 & 35 what does Jesus teach about fasting? What’s the focus and point of fasting?
  5. Do you have a habit of fasting? Why or why not? What could you do to cultivate a more healthy habit of fasting?

Memory Verse of the Week:

Luke 5:31-32 And Jesus answered them, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance." (ESV)
