Judges: Life Without a King

A Wonderful Birth

  • Setting the Stage for Israel’s Next Savior
  • The Peculiar Actions of the Angel of the Lord
  • The Theology of a Wonderful Birth

Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:

  1. Read Judges 12:8-13:25. Compare what we learn about the children in these stories (recalling also Jephthah’s only daughter). What is surprising about Ibzan and Abdon compared with Jephthah and Manoah? What does this teach us about the providence of God?
  2. What does Manoah ask for from the angel? Does the angel give Manoah what he asks for? What does the Lord give Manoah?
  3. What do we learn about God in this miraculous/wonderful birth narrative? Evaluate this statement: We need God, not a to-do list.
  4. Compare the responses of Manoah and his wife in verses 22-23. How do both responses demonstrate faith?

Memory Verse of the Week:

Matthew 1:21  She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. (ESV)
