John: That You May Believe
A Nighttime Inquiry
- Nicodemus’s Curiosity
- Jesus and Old Testament Fulfillment
- The Necessity to be Born Again
Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:
- Read John 3:1-15. Who is Nicodemus? Why might he come to Jesus during the night? What does he want to learn from Jesus?
- How does Jesus respond to Nicodemus? What Old Testament passages and prophecies does Jesus reference? Why does Jesus use this tactic with Nicodemus?
- Why is it necessary to be “born again” (v. 7)? This verb is in the passive voice (the action is done to the subject by someone else). Who does the “birthing”? What is the significance of the passive voice?
- What is the next step for Nicodemus, if he desires to “see the kingdom of God”?
- Have you been born again? How can you be sure? What difference does being born again make in your life?
Memory Verse of the Week:
Titus 3:5 He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit. (ESV)
