John: That You May Believe

The Light of the World

  •  No Greater Testimony
  • No Greater Identity
  • No Greater Hope

Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:

  1. Read John 8:12-20. Verse 12 is well-loved by Christians. What do you love about this verse?
  2. Does Jesus bear witness concerning himself? Why is his witness acceptable? Consider this comment by Josh Moody, “If God is God, then no other higher authority can be appealed to in order to prove that he is God, for then that other higher authority is really God.”
  3. Explain Jesus’ statement in verse 19, “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” Compare with John 14:9.
  4. What does Jesus mean when he says he is “the light of the world”? Consider Isaiah 9:2, 42:6, and 49:6.
  5. What does it mean to “follow” Jesus? How does this compare with “believe”? What are the benefits of following Jesus?

Memory Verse of the Week:

John 8:12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (ESV)
