John: That You May Believe
A Severe Warning
- The Deadliness of Sin
- The Sufficiency of Christ
Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:
- Read John 8:21-30. Where was Jesus going that the Jews could not follow? Can we go where Jesus goes? Why or why not?
- What is Jesus speaking about in verse 23? How does this verse speak to sinful corruption and depravity?
- How does verse 24 compare with other invitations in John’s gospel, like 3:16, 6:35, 7:37-38, and 8:12? How can warnings serve in the same way as promises?
- What must we believe about Jesus in order to be saved? Compare “believe I am he” (v. 24) and “know I am he” (v. 28) with Isaiah 43:10-11.
- Why is Jesus’ lifting up on the cross pivotal to knowing him (v. 28)? What do we see clearly in the cross that we cannot see as well in other places?
Memory Verse of the Week:
Isaiah 45:22 Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. (ESV)
