John: That You May Believe

The Anti-Cancel Culture

  • Love for the Apostate
  • Love for the Wayward
  • Known by Love

Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:

  1. Read John 13:21-38. How could the disciples miss that Judas is the one to betray Jesus? In what way can their missing this detail be an encouragement to us (maybe even a warning)?
  2. Sandwiched between the prediction of Judas’ betrayal and Peter’s denial is the new commandment. How does this order influence how we hear the command to love one another?
  3. Consider the phrase in verse 34: “as I have loved you.” The word “as” can be interpreted as comparative or causal. What are the implications of each of these meanings?
  4. In what ways are we just like Peter? What would the church community be like if we loved “wayward Peters” (one another) instead of judging one another?
  5. Why is verse 35 true?

Memory Verse of the Week:

John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. (ESV)
