Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:
- Read John 13:21-38. How could the disciples miss that Judas is the one to betray Jesus? In what way can their missing this detail be an encouragement to us (maybe even a warning)?
- Sandwiched between the prediction of Judas’ betrayal and Peter’s denial is the new commandment. How does this order influence how we hear the command to love one another?
- Consider the phrase in verse 34: “as I have loved you.” The word “as” can be interpreted as comparative or causal. What are the implications of each of these meanings?
- In what ways are we just like Peter? What would the church community be like if we loved “wayward Peters” (one another) instead of judging one another?
- Why is verse 35 true?
Memory Verse of the Week:
John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. (ESV)
