Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:

  1. Read John 14:15-24. Why does Jesus now turn his attention to love and obedience, after assuring his disciples of answered prayer (v. 12-14)?
  2. Why must the one who loves Jesus obey his commandments? How are love and obedience connected with faith?
  3. Consider verse 16. Who is the first Helper? The same word is used in 1 John 2:1 and translated “Advocate.” How do Jesus and the Spirit “Help” or “Advocate” for us?
  4. What assurances does Jesus give his disciples in verses 18-24? Why does he want to assure them?
  5. How does the teaching in this passage encourage believers to obey Christ?
