Who Has Authority?

John: That You May Believe

Who Has Authority?

  • God’s Sovereignty in Human Shame
  • God’s Sovereignty in Human Authority
  • God’s Sovereignty in Human Sin

Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:

  1. Read John 19:1-16a. Read also Acts 4:27-28. WCF I.9 says, “The infallible rule of interpretation of Scripture is the Scripture itself.” Why is it important to let Scripture interpret Scripture? Why does the WCF call this the “infallible rule of interpretation”?
  2. Why does Pilate try to release Jesus? By what is Pilate motivated?
  3. We often speak about salvation as Jesus bearing the guilt of our sin on the cross, which is absolutely true. How does he also bear the shame of our sin? Why is this significant to highlight?
  4. How should we understand and explain the relationship between human responsibility and God’s sovereignty in light of John 19:10-11 and Acts 4:27-28?
  5. What do we learn about sin when Jesus speaks about “greater sin”? Consider the Westminster Larger Catechism Q. 150 & 151.

Memory Verse of the Week:

2 Corinthians 5:21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (ESV)
