Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:
- Read John 19:31-42. Why are the Jews so concerned about the bodies being removed from the crosses (take into consideration Deut. 21:22-23)? What is the irony behind this?
- Why does the gospel writer make such a big deal about Jesus’ bones not crushed and the piercing?
- Why is it so important to believe that Jesus was truly human and truly died?
- Think about what blood and water has represented in this gospel (see 3:5, 4:14, 6:55, & 7:38). How are these promises tied to the death of Christ?
- Are Joseph and Nicodemus good disciples of Jesus? Why or why not? If they honor Christ with nothing to gain (from their perspective, in that moment), how much more should we be compelled to honor Christ? How do you honor Christ?
