An Ancient Ruler for Today

MESSAGE - Pastor John Lee

Christmas Through the Eyes of Micah

An Ancient Ruler for Today

  • An Ancient Promise
  • A Future Hope
  • A Present Assurance

Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:

  1. Read Micah 5. This chapter is a continuation of the message of hope started in Ch. 4. The glories of the kingdom rest on the coming of the promised Davidic ruler. What is the setting in which the coming of the long-awaited and promised ruler is given?
  2. In what ways is the specific reference to the seemingly insignificant town of Bethlehem meant to instill great hope for God’s people? In our fast-paced, ever-changing, and often disorienting world, how does (or should) this ancient promise of Christ’s birth give you reason to trust and love God more deeply today?
  3. What will this promised ruler, the Christ, do? How is this work of Christ good news for His people and the reason for great hope? Is Christ your hope of glory or have your hopes been placed elsewhere?
  4. V. 10-15 at first glance may leave us unsettled. But these verses should cause great delight in God’s people! Make note of the rapid firing of the “I will” statements God promises to do. The great desire that God places in the hearts of His people is the desire to know and love Him with our whole selves. How do these verses give us great assurance that God’s people will one day know and love Him perfectly?

Memory Verse of the Week:

Micah 5:2 “But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.” (ESV)
