Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:
- Read Genesis 9:8-17. What catches your attention from this passage? Why?
- The word “covenant” is first used in Genesis 6:18 and then used again here. What is a covenant? Why is this word so significant?
- What does it mean that God is a God of covenant? Consider Gen. 17:1-8, Ex. 19:4-6, Jer. 31:31-34, Lk. 22:20, and Heb. 8:6.
- With whom does God make this covenant in Genesis 9:9-10? What are the implications of this covenant for us?
- The word for “rainbow” can be literally translated as “battle bow.” How does this impact our understanding of this sign of the covenant?
- The covenant with Noah has been called the covenant of preservation. What is preserved and for what purpose?
Memory Verse of the Week:
2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. (ESV)
