The Curse of Canaan

MESSAGE – Rev. Dr. Dale Thiele

Genesis: Foundations for Life

The Curse of Canaan

  • Sin Nature Lives On
  • The Seed of the Serpent Lives On
  • The Promise Lives On

Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:

  1. Read Genesis 9:18-28. What catches your attention from this passage? Why?
  2. We believe Moses wrote Genesis, probably after the Exodus, while Israel is preparing to enter the Promised Land, where the people of Canaan live. How does this focus on Canaan in Genesis 9 help the people of Israel during Moses’ day?
  3. How should we think of Noah’s drunkenness? Consider Proverbs 23:29-35 and 31:4-5.
  4. What is the sin of Ham? Think of the 5th Commandment: Honor your father and mother.
  5. Historically Christians have used verses 25-27 to justify racial discrimination and slavery. Why is this interpretation so wrong headed?
  6. How are the blessings and promises of 9:26-27 connected with the promise of Genesis 3:15? How are they fulfilled?

Memory Verse of the Week:

Revelation 5:9-10 And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.” (ESV)
