Genesis: Foundations for Life
Sibling Rivalry
- God’s Gracious Provision
- God’s Sovereign Choice
- God’s Will Worked Out
Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:
- Read Genesis 25:19-34. What catches your attention from this passage? Why?
- Compare Isaac and Rebekah’s barrenness with Abraham & Sarah’s. In what ways are they similar? How are they different?
- Barrenness continues to be a source of pain for many Christians. What encouragement might we find from the examples of barrenness in the Bible?
- Why does God choose Jacob over Esau? Be sure to read Romans 9:10-18. What encouragement do we receive from God’s sovereign election?
- Hebrews 12:16 calls Esau “unholy” or “profane.” Another author says that Esau typifies the “secular” person. How can these adjectives be justified from the account about the birthright (25:29-34)? What are the implications of the last sentence in verse 34?
Memory Verse of the Week:
1 Corinthians 1:27-29 God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.
