Psalms of Ascent: The Journey Home

Waiting

  • Out of the Depths
  • Hope Beyond the Depths

Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:

  1. Read Psalm 130. The Psalmist makes an urgent request for the Lord’s mercy in light of the misery and despair felt over his sin. What can we learn from the psalmist about how we should respond when we find ourselves in the depths?
  2. The Psalmist cries to the Lord and recounts the confidence he has in the Lord. What does the psalmist recount? How is this helpful for us when we are in the depths? Why does this often prove to be difficult for us to do?
  3. The psalmist helps us to practically see what it looks like to hope in the Lord in light of our despair and misery. Share about a time when it was hard to wait upon the Lord. How does biblical waiting often differ from the way the world thinks about waiting? Do you often tie waiting and hoping together?
  4. The psalmist does not merely speak to himself in this psalm but speaks to all of God’s people (v.7-8). We do well to remember together and remind one another of the Lord’s steadfast love and plentiful redemption. In what ways can you practically remember and remind others of this hope we have in the Lord?
  5. How does this psalm point us to the gospel? How can you take this psalm and make it your prayer this week?

Memory Verse of the Week:

2 Peter 3:13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. (ESV)
