Wrestling with God

  • Wrestling With or For God?
  • The Pain of Grace
  • God’s Gracious Weakness

Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:

  1. Read Genesis 32:22-32. What catches your attention from this passage? Why?
  2. What has been the driving desire of Jacob’s life? What does he want? What obstacles have been keeping him from his desire? Up to this point, how has Jacob sought to overcome those obstacles?
  3. In what sense has Jacob been wrestling with God and not man? Why has Jacob been so slow to recognize this truth? Why are we so slow?
  4. Why was the dislocation of Jacob’s hip necessary? How is this similar to Paul’s thorn in the flesh (2 Cor. 12:7)? Why is pain necessary in our growth in grace? What “limps” do you have?
  5. Reflect on verse 25. Why did God not prevail against Jacob? How is this act similar to the weakness Christ demonstrated in his crucifixion (2 Cor. 13:4)?

Memory Verse of the Week:

Hebrews 4:16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (ESV)
