- Read Genesis 42:1-38. What catches your attention from this passage? Why?
- Consider Jacob’s relationship with his sons in verses 1-5 and 35-38. What motivates Jacob’s choices? How does his lack of faith in God’s promises affect his family? What kind of impact do you have on those close to you?
- In what ways is Joseph’s encounter with his brothers in chapter 42 similar, but different to the encounter in chapter 37?
- Consider the brothers’ statement in verse 21 in light of Numbers 32:23, Psalm 7:14-16, Proverbs 28:13 and Galatians 6:7-8. What principle about sin is taught in these passages? What should we do with sin in light of this principle?
- What motivates Joseph’s actions in this chapter? What outcome does he want from his “test”? In what ways does this test refine the brothers?
