Overcome By Compassion

  • The Crucible of Famine
  • Left with Nothing but God Almighty
  • Compassion Swells

Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:

  1. Read Genesis 43:1-34. What catches your attention from this passage? Why?
  2. How does God use the famine to refine Jacob and his family? What idols need to be exposed? How does the famine do this? What does God want for Jacob and his family?
  3. Consider Jacob’s responses in verses 1-14. In what ways is he self-centered and self-pitying? In what ways does he still demonstrate faith? What is the significance of using the name “God Almighty” (cf. 17:1; 28:3; 35:11)? What is Jacob left with in verse 15?
  4. Why does Joseph not reveal himself right away when he sees Benjamin? What does he still want to learn about his brothers?
  5. Why is Joseph overcome by emotion when he sees Benjamin (v. 30)? How does this reunion reflect the truth taught in the three parables in Luke 15?

Memory Verse of the Week:

Luke 15:7 Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. (ESV)
