Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion

  1. Read Mark 12:28-34. Those who have questioned Jesus already have been seeking to catch Jesus in a trap. Can we know the motive of this scribe? What is he seeking to accomplish with his question?
  2. Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 6:4-5 and Leviticus 19:18. Of the over 600 laws in the Mosaic law, how can Jesus say these are the most important? What about the 10 commandments?
  3. The scribe says these two love commands are “much more” than the ceremonial laws of sacrifice. Why would he say that? Can we distinguish between a “moral” law and a “ceremonial” law? How would this be helpful?
  4. Explain how understanding the commandments is connected with the Kingdom of God. How do commandments fit with a Gospel of grace?
