Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion
- Read Mark 12:28-34. Those who have questioned Jesus already have been seeking to catch Jesus in a trap. Can we know the motive of this scribe? What is he seeking to accomplish with his question?
- Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 6:4-5 and Leviticus 19:18. Of the over 600 laws in the Mosaic law, how can Jesus say these are the most important? What about the 10 commandments?
- The scribe says these two love commands are “much more” than the ceremonial laws of sacrifice. Why would he say that? Can we distinguish between a “moral” law and a “ceremonial” law? How would this be helpful?
- Explain how understanding the commandments is connected with the Kingdom of God. How do commandments fit with a Gospel of grace?
