Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion

  1. Read Mark 15:16-37. What does Jesus suffer during this day? Which affliction would be the most difficult to endure? Why?
  2. Read Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53. What is the significance of Jesus fulfilling these prophetic passages?
  3. Read Romans 3:21-26, 8:1-4, & 2 Corinthians 5:21. What is the theological significance of the cross? How does Christ’s action “save” us?
  4. How should we respond to the reality of the cross? Why is paralyzing guilt not appropriate and, actually, an offense to the cross?
  5. Isaac Watts wrote in his famous hymn, “When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.” What does this mean? Why would he respond like this in thinking on the cross of Christ?
