Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion

  1. Read John 1:1-18. As an introduction to his gospel, what does John seek to accomplish with this prologue? What are some of the themes introduced here that John will highlight later in his gospel? If needed, use a concordance (or Bible app) to look up uses of the words darkness, light, life, world, and born in John).
  2. What does it mean for the world to have been in darkness? What is the darkness? Consider Isaiah 8:16-22.
  3. How does John introduce Jesus in this prologue? What does Jesus do? What does it mean that Jesus was “full of grace and truth” and that “grace and truth came through Jesus Christ”?
  4. Read 2 Corinthians 4:3-6. How does Paul’s teaching here “shed light” on what John wants to communicate in John 1? What is the source of the darkness? How does Jesus “shed light” in the darkness?
  5. What does it mean to treasure Christ as prophet? How does Christ serve us as prophet today?
