Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion
- Read 1 Kings 18:20-40. In what ways have the previous events of Elijah’s life (consider 17:1-18:19) prepared him for this “mountain top” experience?
- What does Elijah mean in verse 21 that the people were “limping” between two opinions? In what ways do we “limp” between God and false hopes/idols?
- Why is the cry for an answer (v. 26 & 37) so important in this encounter? What does it look like to cry for an answer from a modern idol? In what ways have you seen God answer prayer in your life?
- Consider the connection of fire with the Lord in Leviticus 9:24 and Hebrews 12:28-29. What is the significance of the fire?
- Why do we tend to long for and depend on “mountain top” experiences? What does God do to sustain our faith?
Memory Verse of the Week: Psalm 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! (ESV)
