Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion

  1. Read 1 Kings 18:30-40. Pay close attention to the actions of Elijah. What stands out about what he does? What does he say about what he does in verse 36?
  2. What does Elijah request for in his prayer? In what ways can his prayer become a model for us?
  3. Aside from answering the challenge with the prophets of Baal, what does the consuming fire of God represent for the people of Israel? Try to think of all the uses of fire in the history of Israel and how God used fire. (A little help? Gen 3:24, 19:24; Ex. 3:2, 13:21, 19:18; Lev. 9:24, 10:2)
  4. Read Hebrews 12:18-29. How does the writer use the “consuming fire of God”? What place does reverence and awe have in the life of a grace-saved Christian?

Memory Verse of the Week: Psalm 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. (ESV)
