Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion

  1. Read 1 Kings 19:9-21. What does Elijah want (consider verses 10 & 14)? Why does he perceive that what he wants will not come about?
  2. How do God’s plans laid out in verses 15-18 accomplish what Elijah wants? How are God’s plans grander in scope than Elijah’s desires (think of the whole redemptive story, including Jesus and the gospel going to all nations)?
  3. Does Elijah anoint Elisha, as God commanded him to do? What does this reveal to us about Elijah? Why does Elijah not do what God commands him to do in verses 15 & 16?
  4. Consider John 3:26-30. What are the similarities between Elijah and John the Baptist? How is John’s response to the news of Jesus’ growing influence different than Elijah’s response to God’s plans?
  5. What does John the Baptist mean in John 3:30? What does this look like in our lives?

Memory Verse of the Week: John 3:30 He must increase, but I must decrease. (ESV)
