Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion
- Read 2 Kings 1:1-18. In what ways is Ahaziah just like his father, Ahab? Recalling the events of 1 Kings 17-21, why is Ahaziah’s pursuit of Baal-zebub so foolish?
- In what ways is Elijah’s message in verses 3-4 similar to his message in 1 Kings 21:19? What is different in this scenario? What is Yahweh’s primary concern with Ahaziah?
- Compare Ahaziah’s response to the word of judgment in this chapter with Ahab’s response in 1 Kings 21:27-29. How is Ahaziah’s response different? How does God respond to each of their responses?
- How can we explain the consuming fire in verse 10 and 12 to be just? What does this swift judgment teach us about God? Why does the third captain live?
- In what ways does God oppose our pursuits of idolatry? How should we respond to such severe mercy?
Memory Verse of the Week: Psalm 33:4-5 For the word of the LORD is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness. He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the LORD. (ESV)
