Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:

  1. Read Jeremiah 31:1-26. What words stand out to you from this passage? What time period does it address? What is the “mourning” the people endure?
  2. Focus on verses 10-14. To what event do these images draw attention? Read Revelation 19:6-8 & 21:1-5. What parallels with Jeremiah 31 do we find?
  3. How does verse 15 fit into the context of the message of consolation? This verse is quoted in Matthew 2:18 as being fulfilled in Christ. How does the arrival of Jesus fulfill Jeremiah 31?
  4. What brings “lamentation and bitter weeping” into your life? How does Christ bring consolation to you in your pain? What hinders you from allowing your mourning to be turned into joy?
