Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:

  1. Read John 5:1-18. Where does Jesus go when he arrives in Jerusalem? What does this say about Jesus? How should we follow his example?
  2. What do we learn about this man who was an invalid for 38 years? Is he easy to like or not like? Why?
  3. Recalling Jesus’ interactions with Nicodemus and the woman at the well, does Jesus merely want to heal this man’s sickness? What does Jesus want for this man?
  4. What are the religious leaders upset about? What does this reveal about their “religion” and understanding of God?
  5. Consider Jesus’ words to the man in verse 14. How does this statement demonstrate grace and truth? How does Jesus want the man to respond?

Memory Verse of the Week:

Isaiah 35:4 Say to those who have an anxious heart, “Be strong; fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God. He will come and save you.” (ESV)
