Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:
- Read John 11:28-44. Why does Jesus just speak a word from a distance to raise Lazarus? What does he want to accomplish?
- The word compassion is not used in this passage, but Christ operates from compassion. In what ways do we see his compassion in this passage?
- Westminster Confession of Faith II.1 says that God is without passions, which means that he is not vulnerable to change nor overcome by a variation in mood. How do we reconcile this with the emotions of Jesus in verse 33?
- Why does Jesus weep? What comfort do you find in his weeping?
- How is Lazarus’ resurrection a foretaste of the future resurrection and a parable of our conversion?
Memory Verse of the Week:
Matthew 9:36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. (ESV)
