Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:
- Read John 17:9-19. What do we learn about our identity from Jesus’ prayer? What does he mean that we are “in the world” but “not of the world”?
- Compare what Jesus says about our identity with Philippians 3:17-20 and 1 Peter 2:11-12. How shall we live in the world?
- What are Jesus’ two prayer requests (hint: v. 11 & 17)? What does Jesus ask for in the words “keep” and “sanctify”?
- For what end (purpose) does Jesus make these requests? What does it mean to be “one”?
- How should we understand “sent into the world” (v. 18) with “in the world,” but “not of the world”?
Memory Verse of the Week:
John 17:11b Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. (ESV)
