Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:
- Read John 18:28-40. What catches your attention in this passage? What are your first impressions of Pilate?
- Evaluate Pilate’s interaction with the Jews. What is his general attitude towards the Jews? How does this impact how he interacts with them?
- What is behind Jesus’ question in verse 34? What does he want to teach Pilate about kingdoms?
- Consider what we have learned about truth in John’s gospel (1:14, 17; 8:31-32; 14:6; 16:13; 17:17). How does this shape our understanding of Jesus’ and Pilate’s interaction about truth?
- Evaluate and apply this statement: “[Truth] is not a body of knowledge to be mastered, but a person to master us.” (Tony Layzell)
Memory Verse of the Week:
John 8:31-32 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (ESV)
