Ecclesiastes: Living Wisely Under the Sun

Learning to Live

  • A Question Worth Asking
  • An Unexpected and Shocking Answer

Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:

  1. Read Ecclesiastes 1:1-11. What sort of legacy do you hope to leave when your life here is over and to what lengths (toils) have you worked at to make that happen?
  2. What does the Preacher mean when he says that all is vanity (v.2)? What is your initial reaction to the Preacher’s bleak assessment?
  3. How does the Preacher’s overarching question in v.3 present a sobering reality to your life? What are some things that you are chasing today that you believe will bring you “gain”? What are some personal examples in your life that have evidenced this sobering reality that there is no gain for your toils under the sun?
  4. One major emphasis throughout these introductory verses to the rest of Ecclesiastes is that life is both short and repetitive (v.4-11). What examples does the Preacher use to expound on this? How do these reminders actually open the door for us to learn how to live well?
  5. How does the short phrase “under the sun” (v.3 and 9) highlight both the reality of being subject to disappointments and frustrations in life today and yet shines a light of hope for those who are living under the sun?

Memory Verse of the Week:

Mark 8:36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? (ESV)
