Ecclesiastes: Living Wisely Under the Sun
The Vapor of Living Wisely
- The Testing of Wisdom
- The Gain of Wisdom
- The Gift of Wisdom
Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:
- Read Ecclesiastes 2:12-17. What does the Preacher now observe and consider in seeking to answer the initial question in Eccles. 1:3?
- In what ways have you experienced the truth that there is more gain in wisdom than in folly (v.13-14)? Has living wisely always resulted in the ways you expected?
- The Preacher is not saying that there is no benefit to living wisely. Rather, he points to the vanity of trusting wisdom to produce lasting gain under the sun. In what ways have you been tempted to treat and use a gift like wisdom and living wisely as a source to seek gain under the sun?
- Eccles. 2:17 is one of the most honest statements one could mutter or think. In what ways is the Preacher’s honest evaluation and reflection an encouragement for you? Is there any gospel hope to be found in these verses?
Memory Verse of the Week:
James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. (ESV)
