Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:
- Read Ephesians 1:11-14. The verb in verse 11 has been translated both as active and passive. The ESV has the active voice: “we have obtained an inheritance.” The 1901 ASV has the passive voice: “we were made a heritage.” What are the differences between these two translations? In what ways are they both correct?
- What is our inheritance? Compare with 1 Peter 1:3-5.
- To be sealed can mean 1) to close up, 2) authenticate, 3) mark ownership, and 4) provide protection. In what way are we sealed by the Holy Spirit? Compare with Eph. 4:30.
- In what ways is the Holy Spirit a down payment of our inheritance? Compare with the OT promises of the Spirit: Isaiah 44:3, Ezekiel 36:26-28, 37:14, and Joel 2:28-32.
Memory Verse of the Week:
Ephesians 1:11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will. (ESV)
