Ecclesiastes: Living Wisely Under the Sun

The Gift of Enjoyment

  • The Pursuit
  • The Grievance
  • The Gift

Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:

  1. Read Ecclesiastes 5:8-6:9. What does the Preacher observe and see? In what ways does the Preacher’s observations expose the vanity of a lifetime pursuit to be satisfied under the sun?
  2. Ecclesiastes 5:10-12 and 6:7-9, alongside many other passages in the Bible, highlights the vanity to pursue money and wealth. Why do people make their life’s goal the pursuit of money and wealth? How might the Preacher’s biblical realism help us?
  3. What are the two analogies that the Preacher uses in showing the grievances of seeking enjoyment under the sun?
  4. In what ways are you tempted to believe that God is more gracious and present in “seasons of wealth” compared to “seasons of toil”? How does Eccles. 5:18-20 point us to the true nature of biblical enjoyment and contentment?
  5. What is the posture of someone who has come to know the true gift of enjoyment? Is this your heart today?

Memory Verse of the Week:

1 Timothy 6:17 “As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.” (ESV)
