Ecclesiastes: Living Wisely Under the Sun

Humble Wisdom

  • A Question Worth Asking
  • Knowing Our Limits
  • Knowing Our Greatest Hope

Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:

  1. Read Ecclesiastes 6:10-7:14. What are some common answers that people would give to the Preacher’s overarching question in 6:12?
  2. In what ways are these “better than” proverbs from the Preacher counterintuitive to the way the world might explain the “good life”?
  3. In what ways can God use death and our human limitations to teach us to live well and to live rightly? How does the stark reality of death and our limitations presented before us help us become more aware of what we deeply love and treasure?
  4. How might considering the work of God in both the days of prosperity and adversity help us to loosen our grips on things under the sun and to open our hands toward God to receive his good gifts? What is something that God may be loosening your grip from today?
  5. How does this section of Ecclesiastes wisely draw our hearts to hope in the gospel of Jesus Christ alone?

Memory Verse of the Week: 1 Peter 4:12-13

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. (ESV)
