Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:

  1. Read Ecclesiastes 8. The Preacher wants to highlight two equally important ideas about human wisdom. What are they?
  2. Look at V. 1-9. How does the Preacher paint the “wise person” in relation to the King? What reasons does he advocate for such counterintuitive wisdom?
  3. Look at V. 10-13. What reality seems to trouble the Preacher? Has this same reality ever troubled you? How does the rest of Scripture and the reality of the gospel give an unshakable assurance to what the Preacher says in V. 12?
  4. Look at V. 14-17. What theme does the Preacher continually draw us back to in light of the evident misery that the fallen world brings about? How does this repeated theme challenge you in your current season of life?
  5. How does this section of Ecclesiastes wisely draw our hearts to hope in the gospel of Jesus Christ alone?

Memory Verse of the Week:

James 1:2-4 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. (ESV)
