Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:
- Read Ephesians 5:15-21. What are the commands in this paragraph? How do they relate to what Paul has been writing? How do they relate to each other?
- Why does Paul contrast getting drunk with being filled by the Spirit? How does this help us understand Spirit filling?
- Compare Colossians 3:16 with Ephesians 5:18-19. How does this parallel passage help us understand Spirit filling?
- Verses 19-21 contain five participles (-ing words). Identify them. Participles are dependent on a main verb. What is that main verb? How does the grammar impact our interpretation and application of these verses?
- Chad and Emily Van Dixhoorn define submission in their book Gospel-Shaped Marriage: “Submission is respect that leads to serving.” How does this definition work in applying verse 21 to your relationships in the church?
Memory Verse of the Week:
Ephesians 5:18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit. (ESV)
