Genesis: Foundations for Life
The Sabbath Pattern
- Sabbath as Completion of Creation
- Sabbath as a Sign
- Sabbath as a Blessing
Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:
- Read Genesis 2:1-3. What do we learn from this passage about creation? About God? Does God need rest? Does God ever stop working?
- What do the words “blessing” and “holy” mean for the seventh day in verse 3?
- Read Exodus 20:8-11 and Deuteronomy 5:12-15. What reasons are given for observing the Sabbath? Why are they different in these two passages?
- Read Hebrews 4:1-11. In what way was the Promised Land rest? What is the greater rest that it points forward to? What is our “Sabbath rest”?
- Why is it a blessing to remember the Sabbath? What keeps you from remembering the Sabbath?
Memory Verse of the Week:
Matthew 11:28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (ESV)
