Genesis: Foundations for Life
A Fit Helper
- Not Good to Be Alone
- Equal But Different
- Resting in God’s Design
Questions for Further Study or Group Discussion:
- Read Genesis 2:18-25. Why does God say it is not good for the man to be alone? Think beyond modern, psychological answers. Think about being created in the image of God.
- Why would God start with the animals? What might God want Adam to learn or realize when he names the animals?
- Consider the word “helper.” 11 of the 16 uses of this word in the OT refer to God (see Ex. 18:4; Ps. 70:5; Ps 121:1 & 2). How might this shape our understanding of the “helper” in Genesis 2?
- The word “fit” (from the ESV) means corresponding to or opposite of. How does this impact our understanding of the relationship between man and woman?
- Why is it best to follow God’s design? What happens when we don’t follow God’s designs?
Memory Verse of the Week:
Genesis 2:18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” (ESV)
